Welcome to Sunday in a Sip. It's June 1, 2025. Hold on to your hats, because today marks the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season. NOAA expects the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season to be above normal. Tomorrow is National Bubba Day! On this day, take a moment to celebrate the “Bubbas” in your life, those friends or family members whose nickname carries warmth, loyalty, and a touch of Southern charm. “Bubba” originates from a colloquial term for “brother,” and it has long been used as an endearment, a nod to connection and closeness. So, hey Bubba sippers, we’re wrapping up May and leaning into the start of a new season. As Jean Hersey once wrote, “June is the gateway to summer.” Hersey, a quiet champion of mindful living, reminded us to honor the pace and beauty of each passing season. Let this first sip of June remind you to slow down, look around, and step gently into summer. Like a good Bubba, may your days be easy, warm, and full of heartfelt connection. So, pour your coffee, tip your hat to the Bubbas, and take a quiet moment of gratitude as we sip into June and savor the simple things that truly mattered this week.

Let’s talk over a cup of coffee

This week, I brewed a bold blend, with a global unease simmering in one cup and long-awaited justice in another. Political shifts stirred the pot, while tech and culture kept things frothy, racing ahead with every scroll and swipe. From AI breakthroughs to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the world continues to reinvent itself. And somehow, it all feels like the perfect conversation to sip on with your Sunday morning coffee, curious, connected, and just a little bit caffeinated. It’s National Pet Week. Do you think cats or dogs are smarter? I had a debate about this with a friend, and it turned into an argument. Finally, I came up with an éclaircissement: it turns out my goldfish had unplugged the
Wi-Fi and she won the argument by default.

What is an AUTOPEN ?

The "autopen" is a mechanical device that replicates a person's signature using a motorized arm, allowing for the automatic signing of documents. It has been utilized by U.S. presidents for decades to sign correspondence and official papers when they are unavailable to sign in person. Notably, President Barack Obama used it in 2011 to sign legislation while abroad, following a Department of Justice opinion affirming its constitutionality.

Who is in control of the autopen?

Control of the autopen lies with trusted White House staff, not external parties. Use of the autopen is only legal if the President authorizes it! This is a requirement affirmed by the Department of Justice. Only the President or someone directly authorized by the President can approve the autopen’s use. Unauthorized use would likely be considered unlawful and potentially a constitutional violation.

Global Conversations are brewing

In a quiet but powerful move on Friday, China poured a fresh cup of diplomacy, inviting over 30 nations to the table, here are just a few - Pakistan, Indonesia, Belarus, and Cuba. Together, they stirred up a new international mediation group, focused on resolving disputes through dialogue, not discord. Sounds like a party! It’s a reminder that even on the global stage, sometimes the best way forward is a calm conversation, a listening ear, and a shared goal. Listen, can you hear the sound of Money!

2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season

NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) predicts that the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will be above normal in activity. Their outlook, which covers June 1 to November 30, forecasts a 60% chance of an above-normal season, a 30% chance of a near-normal season, and a 10% chance of a below-normal season. NOAA expects 13 to 19 named storms (with winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 are likely to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3 to 5 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4, or 5; winds of at least 111 mph).

2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion

Faizan Zaki, a 13-year-old from Allen, Texas, has won the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee, marking the event’s historic centennial. In his fourth appearance, Zaki overcame a dramatic late-round error and defeated eight skilled finalists, ultimately sealing victory by correctly spelling “éclaircissement” (meaning “enlightenment”) in round 21. He receives $50,000 and becomes only the fifth champion to win after finishing as runner-up the previous year.

AI not Gold in dem hills

High in the quiet hills above UC Berkeley, a new supercomputer has taken its place, named in honor of a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist. It’s not just a marvel of metal and code writing itself. It’s a spark for the future, set to fuel breakthroughs in AI and science alike. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Dell Technologies, and NVIDIA, has unveiled plans for a new flagship supercomputer named Doudna, set to be operational in 2026 and ready for users by 2027. The system is named after Jennifer Doudna, a Berkeley Lab-based biochemist and Nobel Prize laureate recognized for her pioneering work on CRISPR gene-editing technology.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

This weekend I did something wild! I went to the movies. Yep, the actual theater. Big screen. Popcorn smell that hits you like childhood nostalgia in a buttery cloud. Seats that recline like they’ve got something to prove. When’s the last time you let yourself sink into that kind of cinematic comfort? I saw Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and let me tell you. that Tom Cruise, is a honey badger. He is out here sprinting, leaping, and hanging off plane wings like rent is due tomorrow. The stunts? Ridiculous. The tension? Peak “white-knuckle popcorn grip.” It’s like the movie shook me by the shoulders and said, “No bathroom breaks. This is serious.” So here’s your Sunday sip of advice: Ditch the chores, ignore the laundry pile judging you from across the room, and give yourself the gift of pure escapism. Grab a friend, hit the theater, and let Cruise do the heavy lifting. After all, life’s too short not to sit in the dark and gasp with strangers.

Pour Over Life

Life is full of crossroads. Some are loud and obvious, like career changes or big moves. Others are quieter, what to say, when to pause, which door to gently close so another can swing open. And while it’s easy to freeze in the face of so many possibilities, there’s something grounding in knowing that making the right choice isn’t about knowing everything, it’s about knowing yourself.

This past week, across dinner tables, quiet commutes, and long walks, people everywhere have been making decisions. Some stepped into new beginnings. Others, perhaps, chose to stay put and water the ground beneath them. In either case, the choice was theirs, and that’s where the beauty lives.

Here's what you need to know. There's rarely a perfect option. But there is often a good one, a right-for-you one. The one that feels like peace when the noise fades. The one that, even if it stretches you, also steadies you. Whether it’s a decision about your home, your health, your relationships, or simply how to spend your next hour, your instincts are worth listening to. They've carried you this far, after all.

And if you’re still uncertain? That’s okay too. Because here’s the whisper tucked into every cup of Sunday comfort. Everything is working out. Maybe not exactly the way you pictured, but often in ways that will make more sense in time. Keep showing up, keep choosing with care, and trust that clarity loves to meet those who keep walking forward.

So take a sip. Breathe deep. You’re doing better than you think.
