World on Edge

India, Pakistan Clash Tensions exploded as India launched missile strikes into Pakistan after a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir, sparking the worst fighting between the nuclear neighbors in over 20 years. Pakistan claims to have downed Indian jets and called the strikes an "act of war," as both sides exchanged heavy fire, leaving dozens dead and injured across the border. The U.S., U.N., and China urged restraint, while global markets wobbled, with India's stocks dipping before recovering.

Vatican Picks New Pope Vatican City as 133 cardinals-the largest conclave ever-gather to elect the next pope, drawing eyes worldwide. In a jaw-dropping twist that’s shaking the Vatican to its core, Chicago-born Augustinian missionary Robert Prevost strutted out onto the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica Thursday.

For decades, the idea of an American pope was basically a holy no-no, thanks to fears that the world’s top superpower shouldn’t call the shots in both politics and religion. But Prevost, no stranger to beating the odds, pulled off the impossible.

His secret weapon? A passport from Peru. The Windy City native spent years in the South American country as a humble missionary before rising to bishop—and eventually, the Holy See clearly decided he was more than just another Yankee.

Now, with one foot in Chicago and the other in Lima, Pope Prevost has broken the mold, and maybe, just maybe, rewritten the rules of who can wear the white cassock. The new Pope Leo XIV celebrated his first mass after his historic election. Go White Sox!

India and Pakistan have confirmed a ceasefire deal after U.S.-led talks to end a conflict between the nuclear-armed rivals. It follows weeks of clashes that were triggered by a gun massacre on tourists last month that India blames Pakistan for. It was their most serious confrontation in decades and left dozens of civilian dead on both sides.

U.S. News

At least four major books-two already released and two about to be released-focus heavily on President Biden’s cognitive decline and the political fallout surrounding it. Biden has been so worried about this that he appeared on the BBC for his first post-election interview. The books focus on President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline, particularly in the context of the 2024 presidential election and its aftermath. Here are the books that you might want to read.

Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson is set for release on May 20, 2025. This book specifically investigates Biden’s cognitive decline, the alleged efforts to conceal it, and the impact on the 2024 election.

2024: How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America by Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager, and Isaac Arnsdorf is scheduled for release on July 8, 2025. This book includes revelations about internal debates over whether Biden should take a cognitive test and the broader handling of concerns about his mental acuity.

Released April 1st, 2025 - Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes, released earlier in 2025, covers Biden’s frailty, the concerns among top Democrats, and the internal discussions about his ability to continue as the Democratic nominee.

This book came out in April 8th, 2025. - Uncharted: How Trump, Biden, and the Most Chaotic Election in History Unfolded by Chris Whipple was released in April 2025. It details Biden’s decline, especially as seen during debate preparations and the campaign, with insights from close aides and campaign staff.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell is Uncertain

The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady, keeping the federal funds rate at 4.25% to 4.5% for the third consecutive meeting. Fed Chair Jerome Powell cited heightened uncertainty about the economic outlook, with risks of both higher unemployment and higher inflation-raising concerns about stagflation. The Fed pointed to solid job market conditions but noted inflation remains elevated and recent GDP data showed a contraction, partly due to the effects of President Trump’s new tariffs and resulting trade disruptions. The central bank signaled it will continue to monitor incoming data before considering any rate changes.

Met Gala 2025: High Fashion or Hollow Spectacle?
The Met Gala returned with its usual display of elitist pageantry under the guise of cultural celebration. This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” centered on Black dandyism. It was a noble concept twisted into a parade of overhyped, overpaid celebrities flaunting wealth and virtue signals. Rihanna, Met Gala royalty, arrived late to reveal she’s expecting her third child, clad in a Marc Jacobs skirt-suit. Diana Ross dragged an 18-foot train while André 3000 wore a backpack shaped like a piano. Meanwhile, the co-chairs, who are they? Domingo, Hamilton, Pharrell, and company, shhh… it’s a secret oversaw a secretive, exclusive event more about vanity than values.

Let’s talk over a cup of coffee.

It’s a run for the roses and Sovereignty galloped into the history books, charging past favorite Journalism (yes, really) to win the 151st Kentucky Derby in a muddy, edge-of-your-seat finish at Churchill Downs. Ridden by Junior Alvarado, Sovereignty snagged the $3.1 million prize, proving once again that long shots and mud-covered miracles still make the best headlines. Sovereignty will skip the Preakness Stakes and instead rest up for the Belmont Stakes on June 7 at Saratoga Race Course. Trainer Bill Mott and the ownership group opted to prioritize the horse’s long-term health, ending any shot at a Triple Crown this year.

Pour Over Life

Some people measure success in dollars. Others in steps walked, books read, or how few emails remain unread (currently 8,271 for me looks like I’m winning!). But if success were scored like an Olympic event, most of us would be nervously watching judges hold up signs reading: “Well... you tried.”

This week I tried to meditate, journal, eat some good food, drink water, be present in the lives I love, call my mom, meet a deadline. I succeeded in drinking water, it’s in my coffee.

We’re told to “prioritize what matters,” but everything seems to matter. That’s the problem. Should I go to the gym or spend quality time with my family? Clean the house or work on that side hustle I’m pretending will someday pay off? Choices feel less like prioritizing and more like a game of Whac-A-Mole for grown-ups. Except the moles are bills, text messages, and guilt.

So I’ve created a new system.

I give myself points. 5 for showing up. 10 for doing something hard. 3 bonus points for laughing when I wanted to scream. And negative 20 for arguing with strangers online. I feel it’s time to break out the sin jar. You know you throw a dollar in the jar when ever you scream at the guy that just cut you off.

Turns out, when you keep score by your own rules, success isn’t a finish line.

it’s a pretty funny path you get to walk every day. It’s the one small victory (and probably some spilled coffee) at a time.
