Welcome to Sunday in a Sip. It's December 7th, 2025, and did you see the Cold Moon? This week starts the rush for the Holidays, so hang on, because tomorrow is National Chocolate Brownie Day!! Yes, we will be pouring on the chocolate, to celebrate National Brownie Day, you can bake a batch of your favorite brownies, try a new recipe like mint chocolate chip or s'mores brownies, or buy them from a local bakery. I like sharing them with friends and neighbors, and most of all making a brownie sundae with ice cream… yummy!
We light the second purple Advent candle—the Bethlehem Candle—this week. It represents Peace and Preparation. Take a moment to reflect on the faithfulness shown by those in the Christmas story and the perfect peace that Christ's coming promises.
Let’s talk over a cup of coffee
I hope you're holding a warm mug in your hands and finding a quiet corner to ease into the day. The world has been loud this week, and sometimes the best way to process the noise is to sit with it, one sip at a time.
This week, the news cycle felt heavier than usual, with headlines that signal significant shifts in both national security and the social safety net. Let's brew a fresh pot and look at a few of the biggest stories from the week of December 1, 2025, with a little more clarity and a little less chaos. This week saw a significant winter storm hit the U.S. Midwest and Northeast, Ukraine peace efforts continue amid fresh Russian attacks, and the Trump administration faces scrutiny over deadly military strikes on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean. Also: Luigi Mangione's pretrial hearings begin, Michael Jordan sues NASCAR over monopoly claims, and global markets react to new economic data and central bank moves.
The mood in Washington shifted sharply this week after a shooting incident involving two National Guard members near the White House. The event, which resulted in the tragic loss of one soldier and critical injuries to another, has had immediate ripple effects on immigration policy.
In response to the suspect's background, the administration has moved quickly to pause specific visa programs and tighten asylum reviews. While the investigation is still unraveling the why, the what is already clear: we are entering a period of heightened scrutiny and restricted movement. It's a sobering reminder of how quickly a single act of violence can reshape policy borders.
Midtown Manhattan officially woke up for the holidays this Wednesday with the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting. There is something undeniably enduring about watching that switch flip; no matter how cynical we get, 50,000 lights against a December sky still manages to spark a little wonder.
TRASHED PANDA
If the headlines from Washington and the discussions on policy feel a bit too serious, let's turn our eyes to ASHLAND, Virginia, where the week's most relatable news story took place. It involves breaking and entering, grand theft, and a very distinct waddle.
While opening, an employee at the Ashland, Virginia-area liquor store found the floor sticky with high-end spirits and a culprit who was less "hardened criminal" and more "furry bandit." The now-renowned trashed panda was passed out on the bathroom floor at the end of his drunken escapade. The raccoon had reportedly fallen through a ceiling tile during the night, knocked over several bottles, and helped himself to the inventory.
When Animal Control arrived, they found the masked intruder passed out in the bathroom, beside the toilet, appearing, by all accounts, visibly intoxicated. He wasn't aggressive; he was just sleepy and perhaps a little unsteady on his paws. Officers noted that he seemed to have a preference for Bourbon—a true Virginian at heart.
The raccoon was safely captured (after a few wobbly evasion attempts) and released into the woods a few days after being held by animal control to sober up. No charges were filed, though he has been permanently banned from the premises.

Wall Street’s Holiday Wish: A Rate Cut and an AI Stocking Stuffer.
The holiday cheer came early on Wall Street this week, with investors acting like kids who peeked at their presents—and they liked what they saw. Stocks had a major rally, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq notching some of their best weekly gains in ages. The fuel for the fire? A potent mix of giddy anticipation that the Federal Reserve might finally be ready to cut interest rates, and another massive wave of enthusiasm for anything tagged with "AI." One megacap tech stock, in particular, set off a chain reaction, proving that the artificial intelligence trade still has plenty of life left in it.
The Fed did confirm one major move, officially ending its post-crisis quantitative tightening (QT) program, a move many see as easing the financial gears. However, the mood is still a little mixed. While the bulls are running, a delayed consumer confidence report showed Americans are feeling significantly less cheerful about the economy, dipping below expectations. So, as we head full steam into the shopping season, the market is up, the Fed is done tightening, but we're all still anxiously waiting to see if the American consumer will join the party.

Iran Snubs the World Cup; Japan’s PM Gets a Catchphrase.
Globally, the news cycle was a mix of serious conflicts and a bit of international drama. Over in the Middle East, Iran’s political scene was reportedly dealing with internal "turmoil," but they still found time for a diplomatic protest, announcing a boycott of the 2026 World Cup draw in the United States over visa allocation issues. Looks like some international football politics are getting as messy as the game itself.
Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine continued to generate somber headlines, with a deadly Russian missile strike hitting Dnipro and fighting intensifying near Pokrovsk. Elsewhere, the tragic toll from cyclones and subsequent flooding in South Asia continued to climb, with Sri Lanka and Indonesia reporting hundreds of casualties. The world's response was swift, with Japan sending an emergency aid team to help Sri Lanka.
On a lighter, yet uniquely Japanese, note: Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s simple, punchy campaign vow—"work, work, work, work and work"—was selected as the country’s top catchphrase for 2025. You know things are running smoothly when the Prime Minister’s relentless work ethic is the year's most quotable soundbite.

GLP-1 Drug Drama: The WHO is In, the Cough is Out.
In a significant public health move that will affect millions, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued its first guideline recommending the long-term use of GLP-1 medications (the class that includes those blockbuster weight-loss drugs) for adults with obesity. It's a huge stamp of approval, but the WHO immediately stressed that access to the expensive, highly demanded drugs remains the biggest global challenge.
Adding a wrinkle to the miracle drug narrative, a new study suggested that the use of GLP-1 agents is associated with an increased risk of chronic cough, regardless of a pre-existing acid reflux diagnosis. So, while the weight is dropping, the coughing is going up. In other major health news, the American Cancer Society released new guidelines recommending a self-swab option for HPV testing to increase cervical cancer screening—a simple, game-changing step for public health.
On the political stage, President Trump reportedly gave Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro an ultimatum to step down during a highly unusual phone call, a move that is making European allies nervous about the US approach to diplomacy.
Sports
In the NFL, Week 14 framed a December sprint where the Bears and Packers are jousting for NFC North control and the Broncos are chasing a 10-game win streak. Injury news kept betting lines wobbling, with Kyler Murray shut down for the season and CeeDee Lamb exiting under concussion protocol as Detroit boosted its playoff odds with a statement win over Dallas.
The NBA mixed history and mortality: Kevin Durant crossed the 31,000-point threshold in Houston, while LeBron James’ legendary double-digit scoring streak finally snapped, ending one of the league’s most stubborn records. At the team level, Oklahoma City stretched its win streak to 14 behind another smooth 30-plus from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, while Boston and New York quietly stacked wins that matter more in April than in early December box scores.
The NHL’s star turn belonged to Connor McDavid, who matched Mark Messier on Edmonton’s all‑time hat trick list during a 9–4 eruption over Seattle that doubled as a reminder of his nightly ceiling. Elsewhere, the Islanders handed the powerhouse Avalanche a rare regulation loss, while the Rangers’ 12th road win underscored why they currently feel like the league’s steadiest wagon.

Diddy Docuseries Drops and Katy Perry Makes It Official.
Netflix decided to kick off the holiday season with a healthy dose of reality and true crime. The streaming giant premiered its new true-crime docuseries, Sean Combs: The Reckoning, a four-part look at the disgraced music mogul currently serving a 50-month prison sentence. It joins a growing catalog of "Diddy" content and is already the buzz of the week. For those looking for something lighter, the latest global reality TV import, Love Is Blind: Italy, also launched, proving that the pod experiment works in any language.
Meanwhile, the celebrity news wires were hot with a highly unexpected, but very public, moment. Pop superstar Katy Perry went Instagram official with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, sharing intimate photos from their recent visit to Japan. The coupling, which had been the subject of quiet speculation, is now front-page news, leaving fans and political commentators alike with plenty to talk about.

Pour Over Life
This week, my friends, the scent of reflection is distinctly dark, rich, and ridiculously comforting. We’re talking about the profound act of Being Baked For, specifically, having a loving soul transform a few pantry staples into a pan of intensely chocolatey, life-affirming brownies, just for you.
Now, let's be honest. Baking for love is not about precision, especially when someone is doing it for you. It’s not about achieving a perfect crumb or a flawlessly glossy top. (If it were, the magic would be lost.) No, being baked for is about receiving a glorious, chaotic, sticky declaration of affection.
You see, the path to a truly reflective life is often paved with sticky gifts from the heart. I recently found myself on the receiving end of a particular, chocolate-fueled madness. I asked for a pan of the deepest, fudgiest chocolate brownies they could conjure for me, knowing I was navigating from a truly awful week.
My baker was clearly aiming for a "comforting hug in a square." While the results were divine, I imagine their preparation looked more like a delicious, flour-dusted love fest, a whirlwind of spoons and sugar dedicated entirely to my well-being.
I thought of my gift as a Cocoa Cloud Incident. You see, I imagined a fine, brown fog of cocoa powder settling like a mysterious, delicious blessing over the kitchen. My baker probably looked like a cartoon chimney sweep who’d just fallen into a chocolate factory, all in the name of making my day a little sweeter.
I picture them stirring the batter, thicker than concrete and smelling overwhelmingly of pure, concentrated joy, managing to spatter small, dark-brown constellations across their ceiling and maybe even the floor, the walls, and the countertop. Spots of chocolate speckled their face. Even maybe they realized they were short on an ingredient and decided that a pinch of cinnamon, a dash of instant coffee grounds, and a silent prayer would suffice. It's fine, it's rustic, they must have mumbled to the whisk, because when you bake for love, the intention is the key ingredient.
When the oven finished my hot gift of the brown square pan, the end was near, the smell was romantic, with a lightly cracked top and a satisfying chewiness.
It was, in a word, perfect.
I didn't care that the counter had likely looked like a confectionery bomb had gone off an hour earlier. I didn't critique the structural integrity of the squares. I just took a bite, closed my eyes, and smiled.
That moment, that taste of devotion baked into fudge, was enough to turn the whole week around. Life often demands that we pursue perfection in our giving, making us afraid to offer anything less than flawless. But the best experiences we receive, the gifts that truly matter, the actions that truly reflect love, are the ones approached with wild, messy, unbridled sincerity.
When someone bakes for you, they are not aiming for a five-star review; they are aiming to make you feel cherished. They take the time, endure the mess, and offer a piece of their perfectly imperfect effort.
Reminding us that receiving a gift made with effort and heart is infinitely more valuable than receiving something bought flawlessly off the shelf. The love is in the effort, not the glaze.
Now, remember to cherish the messy gestures. Appreciate the slightly burnt edges and the uneven distribution in life's bake-off, because the most significant gifts are those given with heart, regardless of their polish. And let that generosity inspire your own actions this week. So go off this week and lick the spoon, and be sticky. Taste the world’s sweetness.
Thank you,
Marcel
