Let’s talk over a cup of coffee

The aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s assassination led to social media uproar and job terminations over celebratory posts. The U.S. deployed National Guard troops in Memphis and heightened immigration enforcement. Israel continued its military offensive in Gaza, dimming hopes for peace. Financial markets reacted to the Federal Reserve’s latest rate cut.

The 1st Day of Fall, also known as the Autumnal Equinox, marks the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and typically occurs around September 22nd or 23rd each year. Its origins lie in ancient cultures’ observations of celestial events and agricultural cycles, where the equinox served as a key marker in seasonal transitions.

Pour Over Life

The family brew.

Family is a lot like a casserole, you never quite know what’s inside, but it’s always better when you share it together. And let’s be honest, the “secret ingredient” isn’t cream of mushroom soup, it’s time. Time with each other. Time with the people who were there before Wi-Fi, before TikTok, before you could burn dinner in an air fryer.

Our elder family members? They’re basically the original influencers. They passed down the recipes, the “how things were done,” and the “why you never trust a potato salad left in the sun.” But here’s the thing, we can’t get those traditions, those quirky sayings, those stories of walking uphill both ways in the snow, unless we sit down and actually listen. Really listen. Not the nodding-while-checking-your-phone kind of listen, but the lean-in, “tell me again how Grandpa got kicked out of the Navy for playing the accordion at inspection” kind of listen.

Because when we do, we carry those traditions forward. We learn the family jokes, the reasons behind the weird holiday rituals, and why Aunt Gloria insists on wearing a hat shaped like a turkey every Thanksgiving. And more importantly, we remind our elders that they’re not just old chapters in a book; they’re the living storytellers keeping the family library open.

So here’s the pour over for this Sunday.

Carve out time. Pour a cup of coffee, sit at the kitchen table, and soak in the stories like gravy on mashed potatoes. Laugh, cry, roll your eyes, and for GOD’s sake be present. Because family isn’t about perfection, it’s about connection. And every time we show up for our elders, we’re brewing up stronger bonds that make the whole family taste better.

Here is something to Sip on this week:

Traditions don’t live in recipe cards or photo albums, they live in people.
Spend time with them before the stories go cold.

Thank you.
Marcel
