Welcome to Sunday in a Sip. It's February 2, 2025 (Ground Hog Day). Yes, it is Ground Hog Day. The first recorded celebration of Groundhog Day in the U.S. occurred in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, in 1887, when a local newspaper editor, Clymer Freas, declared the groundhog, named Punxsutawney Phil, the official weather prognosticator.

The event has since grown into a major festival, attracting thousands of visitors each year. I will let you know later in my newsletter why this day is the day to hope for spring and the renewal of your life. Today is the Day. Spring is March 20th, only 46 days away.

Today, let's start by staying in bed for a while and relaxing, sipping a sip, and grabbing your Sunday in a Sip Blanket. Yes, wrap yourself in warmth and cuddle while you read. Here we go.

Super Bowl 2025 Is Set

The Kansas City Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles. The 59th Super Bowl will take place at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on Feb. 9th, at 6:30 PM. You can watch the game on FOX or Streaming: Fox Sports app, Fubo (they are offering a free trial). The Halftime show will feature - Kendrick Lamar. Do you remember what act appeared 15 years ago during the 44th Superbowl 2010 halftime show? It was - The Who - talking about - My Generation. My Generation, one of the most iconic songs by The Who, was released in 1965 and became an anthem for youth rebellion and counterculture. Kendrick Lamar became the first non-classical or jazz artist to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his album DAMN, recognized for its "virtuosic song collection" and depth in 2018. DAMN explored themes of morality, faith, and humanity. It looks like we've gone from "Hope I die before I get old" to "Sit down, be humble"—quite the evolution in halftime vibes, don’t you think?

Auschwitz Never Again

This week started like no other; Monday was the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, commemorated with a solemn ceremony at the former Nazi death camp in Oswiecim, Poland. The event was attended by approximately 3,000 guests, including delegations from over 50 countries and around 50 Holocaust survivors.Eighty years after the liberation of Auschwitz, we are reminded that the weight of history is not merely to be remembered but to be honored with action. The voices of the survivors, though fewer now, echo timeless lessons about the fragility of humanity and the resilience of hope. In commemorating this anniversary, we pledge not only to remember the unimaginable horrors of the Holocaust but to confront hatred, bigotry, and indifference wherever they arise so that "Never Again" becomes a reality, not just a promise.

Wake Up it’s DeepSeek AI

Chinese tech startup DeepSeek just launched their latest AI model, DeepSeek R1, and they did it for a fraction of what America spends. I guess they took the 'budget-friendly' approach to world domination. Meanwhile, President Trump called it a 'wake-up call." Funny because, at my age, I don’t even need a wake-up call. I’m already up three times a night.

Our World

Palestinians are returning to damaged and destroyed homes in northern Gaza, while Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have seized more towns beyond Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

American Airlines Tragedy

A tragic plane crash near Washington, D.C. occurred, with 64 aboard all perished. An American Airlines Bombardier CRJ700, operating as Flight 5342 from Wichita, Kansas, collided with a U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter with three soldiers aboard during its approach to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Total 67 fatalities.

This incident could potentially become one of the deadliest air crashes in U.S. history in nearly 24 years. Among the victims were renowned figure skaters Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, who were returning from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita.

Day of hope

Groundhog Day is known as the "Day of Hope" because it’s the ultimate test of whether we’ll get six more weeks of winter or if we can finally shed our winter coats and bask in some sunshine. According to the legend, if the groundhog sees its shadow, we’re stuck, six more weeks of winter. GROOOOAAAN! But if it doesn’t, we get an early spring, which feels like winning the weather lottery. It's a day full of hope that maybe, just maybe, we can retire our snow shovels and sweaters and start daydreaming about flip-flops and sunshine. It’s like a weather-related cliffhanger that leaves us all wondering, “Will the groundhog grant us mercy?” Today is the day.

Folks, we’re getting.. you guessed it GROOOOAAAN!

FIRST AMERICAN FREED—FINALLY!

Keith Siegel. The name. The story. The nightmare.

A dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, he was taken hostage by Hamas in Gaza. For 484 days. That’s one year, three months, and a lifetime of hell. He’s the first American to be freed since the ceasefire began. And about time.

Born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, (home of college basketball dreams and southern charm) he traded Tar Heel blue for Israeli white and blue over 40 years ago. That’s commitment. And on October 7, 2023, when Hamas stormed into Israel, his life changed. His wife, Aviva, was grabbed too. She was freed in the first prisoner swap. Keith? Not so lucky.

He remained. Stuck. Forgotten? Not by his family. Not by his friends. Not by his country. But Washington under Biden? The wheels of diplomacy turn slower than a New York City doorman on a cold day.

And now, after endless negotiations, pressure from Donald Trumps team, and who knows what backroom dealings, Keith Siegel is free.

Now he returns to a world that kept spinning without him. But for Keith, time stood still. He left in terror. He came back to a spectacle. And boy, did Hamas put on a show. His release was all part of Hamas propaganda playbook, stage, drones, the whole production.

Pour Over Life

Have you ever thought about how you handle awkward moments in life? Here are my thoughts using confidence. Embarrassing moments happen to everyone. A sudden conversation silence, a misstep in social etiquette, or an unexpected spotlight can trigger immediate discomfort. While often fleeting, these situations have a way of lingering in our minds longer than they do for anyone else. But handling them with confidence can make all the difference.

Awkwardness often comes from a fear of judgment or uncertainty. The brain tends to amplify these experiences, making them feel far more significant than they actually are. In reality, most people often are too focused on themselves to dwell on someone else’s minor blunder.

The best way to handle an uncomfortable situation is to acknowledge it rather than resist it. A quick laugh or a lighthearted remark can diffuse tension and show self-assurance. When you feel discomfort, remind yourself not to take it at face value. Shift your focus outward. You can try to actively listen or engage with others. I call this redirection. I redirect my attention away from my personal discomfort.

If you’re someone who frequently stumbles into awkward situations, like starting a handshake when the other person goes for a fist bump or laughing at a joke that wasn’t actually a joke. Then, try preparation, which I call my secret weapon. Running through common scenarios in advance, like surviving a networking event without nervously over-explaining your job or giving a presentation without forgetting your own name, can help build confidence. And when an uncomfortable moment inevitably sneaks up on you, just take a deep breath, remind yourself that no one’s replaying it in slow motion, and chalk it up as a valuable life experience.

Most importantly, it’s best not to dwell on these moments. People forget minor stumbles quickly, and moving on with confidence makes a lasting impression far more substantial than the moment of awkwardness itself. Even if you think it probably would make for a great story later.

Ultimately, while discomfort may be unavoidable, how one reacts to it can make all the difference.
