Welcome to Sunday in a Sip. It's June 8th, 2025, and we’re stirring the week’s highlights into your morning brew. Tomorrow starts National Flag Week, it’s a Full moon on June 10th (Strawberry Moon), and don’t forget Father’s day is June 15th, but you can celebrate with National Bourbon Day, which is interestingly the day before Father’s day. From border tensions to billionaire tweets, the world keeps pouring us stories that swirl and stir. But here, we take it slow. Sip by sip, we serve what matters, with hope, clarity, and just the right flavor to ease into your week. Let’s glance back and lean forward, together.
Let’s talk over a cup of coffee
In 1964, Congress declared bourbon "America’s Native Spirit," but its roots go back to frontier grit and corn-rich Kentucky soil. Legend has it that a Baptist minister named Elijah Craig, charred oak barrels to store his whiskey. Then the magic happened and he accidentally birthed bourbon’s signature smooth smoky taste. Since then, it's graced back porches, jazz clubs, and quiet Sunday chats. So today, whether you’re spiking your brew or savoring stories over a strong cup, remember: bourbon isn’t just a drink, it’s American history in a glass. Here's to flavor, fire, and a little bit of folklore.

World News
The biggest world news story this week is arguably the continued escalation of conflict in the Middle East, particularly Israel’s actions in Gaza and Lebanon, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, both of which have seen significant military developments and humanitarian consequences. Additionally, U.S. political and diplomatic moves, including the Trump-Xi call, the Trump-Musk feud, and new immigration policies, have also captured global attention. Here are a few major stories for the week.
Ukraine’s “Operation Spider’s Web” used 117 FPV drones to strike Russian airbases, damaging and destroying up to 41 aircraft, including strategic bombers, at four locations.
Russia launched deadly drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, days after Ukraine conducted a significant attack on Russia’s bomber fleet.
The bodies of two Israeli-American hostages were recovered from Gaza.
Trump signed a proclamation Travel Ban, barring travelers and immigrants from 12 countries and restricting entry for nationals from seven others.
U.S. News
Trump’s reinstatement of a travel ban affecting nationals from 12 countries, which takes effect June 9, 2025.
The public feud between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, which has dominated political and business headlines. Trump publicly stated that the “easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.” Meanwhile, Tesla’s stock plunged by as much as 18% in a single day, wiping out over $150 billion in market value—the largest single-day loss in the company’s history.
HEAVY METAL
Washington D.C. is prepping for the rumble in the capital. they have been bracing for a parade like no other, 7 million pounds of military might rolling through Constitution Avenue on June 14. Think Abrams tanks, Bradleys, and Howitzers, all telling the Army’s 250-year story in steel and spectacle. But it’s not just a walk in the park. The road’s reinforcement alone has already sipped up $3 million, with the full tab possibly hitting $45 million.
Engineers are laying steel plates, padding tank tracks, and keeping the pace at a slow crawl, all to spare DC’s roads from a full-blown asphalt apocalypse. The gear’s arriving from Texas via Maryland, and nearly 7,000 soldiers will march alongside the machines.
It’s a bold salute to military tradition, with a side of infrastructure anxiety. Here’s to hoping the only cracks are in the news media’s stories.
Strawberry Moon
June’s full moon, known as the strawberry moon, will rise on the evening of Tuesday, June 10. It will appear extraordinarily low in the sky. This spring's final full moon will be the lowest full moon in almost 20 years. June's full moon is called the strawberry moon because it signaled to some Native American tribes that it was the time of year to gather ripening wild strawberries.
Did you know the sign and phase of the moon at the exact moment of your birth reveals more about you than you could possibly imagine? Together they influence your strengths and passions...and reveal your potential for abundance, love and prosperity.
Were you born on an Aries Full Moon? Or was it a Libra Waning Gibbous? And what does it all mean?
I was born under a Pisces Full Moon, and it was eye opening to discover how that led me on the journey I have taken so far, and what it means for my future. What does your future look like?

Sports
2025 NBA Finals - features the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers battling for the Eastern Conference title, while the Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves compete in the Western Conference finals.
Sovereignty Wins 157th Belmont Stakes in Derby Rematch at Saratoga, the final leg of the Triple Crown held at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, NY, due to ongoing renovations at Belmont Park. The real race between Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty and Preakness champion Journalism at Saratoga delivered a little drama on Saturday, a little redemption, and a whole lot of horsepower.
In a rematch that felt more like a sequel than a horse race, Sovereignty trotted into the spotlight at the 157th Belmont Stakes, and this time, he wasn’t playing second fiddle. With jockey Junior Alvarado aboard, the 5-2 second favorite made a smooth, confident charge on a track that dried just in time for the main event, winning in 2 minutes and 69 seconds.
Journalism, fresh off a Preakness win and still riding high from Derby fame came in second, again. Baeza rounded out the familiar trio in third. Yes, the top three were the same as the Derby, just shuffled like a deck in the hands of fate.
It’s the second year the Belmont's been held at Saratoga, and if we keep getting storylines like this, we say keep the coffee hot, the track fast, and the surprises coming.

Pour Over Life
When Matthew McConaughey told his father he was dropping out of law school to become an actor, his father didn’t flinch. He simply said, “Don’t half-ass it.”
That was it. No lecture. Just a challenge.
I like to say, If you’re in the game. be in the game. Don’t straddle the sidelines, half hoping you won’t get hit. Life wasn’t meant to be played with one foot in and one foot out. And yet, that’s where so many of us live today. Living life detached, distracted, guarding ourselves from risk, and wondering why we feel so empty inside.
We’re a world that’s barely trying to find real meaning, when what we really need is to care deeply and give it our all.
Serving, building, creating, now that requires conviction. Real presence. Real effort. It doesn’t make life scarier, it really makes it sweeter. Like adding a splash of cream to black coffee, leaning all the way, in haling the aroma. Now that brings out the depth. Half-hearted is bitter. Full-hearted? That’s where the flavor is.
Half-heartedness drains you. Full-heartedness fills you.
So this week, pour in more. Not just because it’s noble, but because that’s where joy lives.
