Who would sign a lease for 9000 years?
The man who did was Arthur Guinness, the founder of Guinness Brewery. On December 31, 1759, he signed a 9,000-year lease for £45 per year (45 pounds equal to 59 dollars US) on St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin, Ireland. He did this because he saw great potential in the location, which had a good water supply—essential for brewing—and was near the River Liffey, making transportation easier. The long lease ensured stability for his brewery, allowing him to grow his business without risking losing the site. This decision created Guinness, one of the world’s most famous beer brands.
Economy
Gold continues to climb and oil continues to fall.
The price of gold has hit the $3,000 per ounce mark for the first time as demand for the precious metal surges. Gold touched a record $3,004.86 per ounce on Friday, with prices having risen by 14% since the start of 2025
Gold Price $2,993.60
Oil Price $67.18 per barrel WTI
The Three T’s
Tariffs, Tantrums & Trouble, it’s all about the Complicated Aftermath of the Trade War. It’s back, like a bad haircut you thought had grown out, but nope, it is mocking you in the mirror. The U.S. and China are throwing tariffs around like confetti at a billionaire’s third wedding, and guess who’s stuck cleaning up the mess? That’s right baby.
Washington slaps duties on Chinese tech and steel; Beijing fires back with taxes on American soybeans and whiskey. The result? Prices are soaring higher than a hedge fund manager’s ego, and supply chains are knottier than my grandmother’s yarn collection.
Farmers are frowning, CEOs are sweating, and consumers- yes, you and me- are paying more for everything from cars to ketchup. Meanwhile, economists are pacing like expectant fathers, warning of slowdowns, inflation, and other scary words. Oh no the sky is falling.
Will this madness end? Maybe when politicians stop treating the economy like a piñata at a toddler’s birthday party. Until then, it’s time to tighten your belts, literally. The good news is that the prices of eggs and gas are going down.
Columbia U Protests Spark Federal Crackdown
A Columbia grad was detained by the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) after leading campus protests as the Trump administration pulled $400M in federal grants from the university. Tensions rose as students pushed back, calling it an attack on free speech.
Columbia pledges to take legal action. Mahmoud Khalil, a recent graduate of Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Khalil, a 30-year-old permanent resident of the United States and green card holder, was arrested at his university-owned apartment near Columbia's campus in Manhattan.
Khalil was a prominent Palestinian activist who played a key role in leading pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University last year. He remains in ICE custody in Louisiana. A federal judge temporarily halted his deportation and ordered that he not be removed from the United States while the court considered the legal challenge brought by his attorneys.
The war on dissent erupts in the city that never sleeps. A stark reminder that in the fight to protect Americans from those who seek to do harm, security must never be compromised.
SHUTDOWN SHUFFLE
The Senate Squeaked by with a GOP Bill in a last-minute dash and passed a GOP-led spending bill 54-46, averting a government shutdown. Democrats fumed over the partisan measure, but Schumer's shift gave cover for others to join Republicans, sending the bill to Trump's desk, which he signed.
Pour Over Life
There’s something about swaying. A quiet, rhythmic motion that feels as old as the wind. We do it without thinking. Rocking on our heels as we wait in line, shifting side to side to the sound of music, cradling a baby in our arms. It’s a movement of comfort, of presence, of being in sync with something beyond ourselves.
Swaying soothes the joints, gently moving the body without strain, easing stiffness, and inviting circulation into places that might have been forgotten. It’s a simple way to stimulate balance, recalibrating our inner sense of steadiness, a practice in trust as we let gravity and motion work in tandem. In the quiet repetition of the movement, nerves soften. Stress unwinds. Breath finds a rhythm to match the sway, and suddenly, everything feels a little lighter.
It’s a habit worth cultivating. Swaying while waiting in line, listening to music, or watching the sunset is letting movement become a ritual of release. Like the trees that bend with the breeze but never break, swaying reminds us to be flexible, to flow, and to meet life with ease.
So today, try it. Stand, breathe, sway. Let the motion carry you into a moment of stillness within movement. Let it be your reminder that softness is strength, that balance is fluid, that sometimes, the best thing you can do is let yourself go with the rhythm of the world.
