Welcome to Sunday in a Sip. It's September 28th, 2025, tomorrow is National Coffee Day!! Sippers, it is our day, and we need to celebrate. Do you want to recognize the perfect cup of java? According to an expert cupper (a professional coffee taster), there are four components of a perfect cup: aroma, body, acidity, and flavor. Caffeine is not part of the equation.

From the moment the average coffee lover opens a fresh bag of coffee beans, the aroma beckons, percolating the senses. Even those who don't drink coffee tend to enjoy the fragrance roasted beans cast.

Let’s talk over a cup of coffee

Did you know that Finland, the world's biggest coffee consumer, has a law that mandates a 10-minute coffee break (or kahvitauko) for workers? Similarly, the Swedish concept of Fika (a break for coffee and a treat) is a huge part of their national identity.

Now, here’s a question for you, my fellow sippers.

What’s the most essential coffee ritual?

Is it the quiet moment alone, when the house is still, the mug is warm, and you can hear the faint hum of the refrigerator working harder than you are? Or is it the connection—the shared clink of mugs across a kitchen table, a café counter, or the office breakroom, where coffee magically transforms coworkers into a temporary family who can survive another Monday?

Personally, I think coffee rituals are a bit like socks. Everyone’s got their own pair, and some are mismatched, but they still do the job. Take the “silent sip ritual,” for example. This is when you sit down with that steaming mug, close your eyes, and try to have a moment of Zen before reality barges in. The coffee is the shield, the mug is the sword, and the Wi-Fi notifications are the enemy you’re desperately trying to ignore.

Then there’s the “storytelling ritual.” This phenomenon occurs in kitchens, diners, and coffee shops worldwide. Two people sit down with mugs, and suddenly it’s a confessional booth with caffeine. Secrets spill easier than cream. Dreams, worries, gossip, and the “Can you believe what Janet said?” moments. You know, it’s all powered by that swirling liquid.

And let’s not forget the “practical ritual.” This is the one where coffee isn’t a warm hug or a social glue, it’s pure survival fuel.

The ritual goes like this. Wake up, shuffle like a zombie, push the button on the coffee machine, and pray. This is less a ritual and more a life support system.

So, which one is the most essential? Truth is, it’s whichever one you need that day. Sometimes we need silence. Sometimes we need laughter.

Sometimes we just need the miracle of not face-planting on the keyboard.

Here is the real pour.

Coffee rituals aren’t about the coffee; they’re about giving ourselves permission to pause, connect, or simply reboot our system. So whether you’re a solitary sipper or a social chatter, the real ritual is to never underestimate the power of a cup to change your day.

What’s your coffee ritual: a quiet sanctuary, social chatter, or survival fuel? Leave me a comment or send me an email. I would love to hear yours.

ECONOMY

It’s all about the rate cut. The Federal Reserve's decision earlier in the week to trim the federal funds rate by 25 basis points (to a range of 4.00%−4.25%) served as the week's key market driver. The Fed characterized the move as a "risk management cut," acknowledging rising downside risks to its employment mandate after a recent slowdown in job gains. Critically, the Fed’s updated projections suggested policymakers anticipate two additional rate cuts before the end of 2025.

The stock market reacted with enthusiasm to the easing monetary policy. Major indices, including the Dow, S&P 500, and NASDAQ, all closed the week at new record highs. The rally showed signs of broadening, with the small-cap Russell 2000 also hitting a new high for the first time in four years, suggesting investor optimism about corporate earnings and future economic growth.

In contrast, the bond market displayed caution. Treasury yields generally rose, a reaction that typically signals investor concern that the rate cut, coupled with high inflation, could diminish the value of fixed-income returns.

Inflation continues to present a significant hurdle for the economic outlook. Policymakers noted that inflation is "somewhat elevated," keeping the focus squarely on price pressures.

U.S. economy is navigating a period of "two-sided risk," with the Fed walking a fine line between supporting the job market and preventing a re-acceleration of inflation.

World News

During the UN General Assembly in New York, multiple US allies, including the UK, Canada, and Australia, formally recognized a Palestinian state, defying the US and Israel amid escalating bombardment in Gaza. Geopolitical tensions also spiked after Russian jets breached NATO airspace over Estonia.

U.S. News

The week was dominated by high-stakes political and health news, leading with a controversial White House announcement.

The administration, including the President and the Secretary of Health and Human Services, announced a new initiative to tackle the autism rate, simultaneously promoting an unproven link between acetaminophen (Tylenol) use during pregnancy and autism. The FDA will reportedly issue a physician notice on the matter, while many mainstream medical organizations quickly challenged the scientific basis of the claims.

In Washington, a government shutdown loomed as the deadline to fund federal agencies approached. Negotiations stalled after the President canceled talks, leading to finger-pointing over the budget standoff between the Republican-controlled Congress and the Democratic minority. Key sticking points included Democratic demands for the restoration of Affordable Care Act subsidies and a rollback of recent Medicaid cuts.

Other notable news included the return of Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show after its suspension, and ongoing focus on the aftermath of conservative activist Charlie Kirk's memorial service. The administration also announced an executive order imposing a controversial $100,000 fee on H-1B visas, immediately drawing fire from business and medical groups concerned about its impact on the U.S. workforce.

Sports

The final week of September saw the MLB postseason picture solidify, a chaotic round of NFL football.

In MLB, the playoff field was nearly set, with the AL East race a photo-finish between the Blue Jays and the Yankees, and the AL Central coming down to the wire for the Guardians and the Tigers. The Mariners clinched their division for the first time since 2001. A major headline was Cal Raleigh's historic push, setting a new single-season home run record for his franchise.

NFL Week 3 saw upsets and close calls. The previously unbeaten Packers suffered a surprising loss, and the Eagles remained undefeated but were nearly knocked off.
The Chiefs finally got a win, improving to 1-2.

Entertainment

The entertainment world saw the return of a major late-night host and celebrity focus on global issues.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! returned to air after its brief suspension by Disney following the host's political commentary, dominating U.S. media attention. Meanwhile, major celebrities continued to speak out on the Israel-Gaza conflict, with actress Jennifer Lawrence calling the situation "no less than a genocide." This follows other high-profile, politically charged moments at recent award shows.

In music, the 2025 Independent Music Awards were held in London, with Fontaines D.C. winning Best Album for Romance. Country music celebrated the Nashville Songwriter Awards, where Josh Phillips took home Song of the Year. Box office news saw a new release, "One Battle After Another," on track for a strong debut, while the animated film "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie - Infinity Castle" continued its strong run.

Pour Over Life

You know, coffee has a way of sneaking into history books. Have you heard the tale of how we got the phrase “Cup of Joe”?

It is one of my favorites.

Picture this: it’s 1914, the U.S. Navy is sailing the seas, and Admiral Josephus Daniels, who, by the way, had the kind of name that makes you want to salute just for saying it, decides that alcohol on ships is a bad idea. So he bans it. That’s right, the sailors, already homesick and salt-soaked, suddenly had their rum rations yanked away.

Now, imagine the collective groan from a thousand throats across the ocean. No more whiskey, no more gin, no more "just one more for courage." Instead, the strongest thing left in the galley was… coffee. A dark, bitter, black-as-the-night replacement that kept you awake but didn’t help you dance a jig. Sailors, with their usual poetic flair, muttered: “Well, I guess it’s another cup of Joe.” And just like that, Josephus Daniels unintentionally brewed himself a linguistic legacy.

Think about it, an Admiral thought he was tightening discipline, but what he really did was give us a phrase we still use over a century later every time we stumble to the kitchen and fumble for the coffee pot. That’s right, one man’s ban on booze turned into your Monday morning lifeline.

Here is a way to look at it..

Sometimes what feels like a punishment is really just destiny in a mug. Or, more simply put, when life takes away your whiskey, make sure the coffee’s hot.

Thank you.
Marcel
