A West Virginia housewife and mother of 15, Marian McQuade is widely credited as the driving force behind the establishment of National Grandparents Day. Beginning in 1970, she started a campaign to create a day to honor grandparents and to encourage younger generations to appreciate the wisdom and guidance that older people offer. Her efforts were motivated by her concern for lonely and forgotten elderly individuals in nursing homes. In 1978, Congress passed a resolution to designate the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation on August 3, 1978, officially creating the national holiday.

Meanwhile, the trade deficit ballooned to $78.3B in July as imports outpaced exports. Consumers kept spending in July, but with headwinds of tariffs and a softer job market, the question lingers: how long can the sip stay sweet before it turns sour?
